Abstract

Presents data about local jail inmates: their demographic characteristics, offenses, conviction status, criminal histories, sentences, time served, drug and alcohol use and treatment, family background, physical and mental health care, and conditions of confinement. Compiled from in-depth interviews with a nationally representative sample of over 6,000 local jail inmates in 431 local jails, this is the most comprehensive study to date of the more than 567,000 inmates in local jails.
