Programs evaluated in the seven States include school-based probation in Pennsylvania, a detention center incarceration program in Virginia, an adult diversion program in New Hampshire, the Multnomah County drug diversion program in Oregon, a homicide and violent crime strike force in the Illinois counties of Madison and St. Clair, alternative incarceration in Utah in the form of a day reporting center, and a drug court program in Oklahoma. The brief summary evaluations of multijurisdictional task forces indicate they have been effective in reducing the availability and use of illegal drugs and in reducing violent crime levels. An appendix contains guidelines and criteria for the nomination of effective criminal justice programs. 50 references
