The Compendium profiles evaluated programs that effectively address juvenile delinquency prevention, improvements in academic achievement, and other youth issues. The editors reviewed 150 documents and chose 46 programs, based on three criteria: program characteristics, data produced, and quality of evaluation. The nine crucial program principles they identified were: (1) quality of implementation; (2) caring, knowledgeable adults; (3) high standards and expectations; (4) parent/guardian participation; (5) community involvement; (6) holistic approaches; (7) youth as resources/community service and service-learning; (8) work-based learning; and (9) long-term services, support, and follow-up.
