This report reviews the training and technical assistance programs funded by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) and offered through the Missing and Exploited Children's (MEC) Training and Technical Assistance Program for juvenile justice professionals handling and responding to cases involving missing, exploited, and abused children.
Abstract
In order to conduct proper investigations, effectively manage cases, protect young victims, prosecute perpetrators, and prevent further victimization of missing, exploited, and abused children, significant experience and expertise are required. Since 1993, the Fox Valley Technical College (FVTC) in Wisconsin has provided the training and technical assistance, through the Missing and Exploited Children's (MEC's) Training and Technical Assistance Program for juvenile justice professionals in order that they have the necessary skills and information to address the myriad of issues that surround missing, exploited, and abused children. The FVTC offers five-week long training courses. The report offers a brief description of each of the five training programs: Child Abuse and Exploitation Investigative Techniques; Child Fatality Investigations; Child Sexual Exploitation Investigations; Responding to Missing and Abducted Children; and Team Investigative Process for Missing, Abused, and Exploited Children. Also reported are three additional training programs offered through FVTC, in cooperation with OJJDP's National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). These programs focus on Internet crimes against children: (1) Protecting Children Online; (2) Protecting Children Online/Unit Commander Policy Training Program; and (3) Protecting Children Online for Prosecutors.
