Annotation: This report presents findings from the National Crime Victimization Survey from 1995 to 2000 on the violent victimization of college students with comparisons of gender, race, on-campus/off-campus, and firearm usage.
Abstract: This report examines the incidents of college student victimization and compares the findings to persons of similar age in the general population. In addition, the report determines the extent to which student victimization occurs in campus and off-campus locations and settings, as well as the prevalence of alcohol and drugs in student victimizations. Highlights of the report include the following: (1) for both Whites and Blacks, students were victims of violence overall at rates lower than those of nonstudents; (2) among women, except for rape/sexual assault for which there were no statistical differences, college students experienced crimes of violence at lower rates than those of nonstudents; and (3) firearms were present in 9 percent of all violent crimes, 7 percent of assaults, and 30 percent of robberies against college students.
