Abstract: COPS has invested more than $866 million in various programs intended to increase school security. The range of such programs was expanded in fiscal year 2002 to include SOS, which funds school safety equipment and/or programs intended to improve school safety. SOS grants assist in the purchase of such security measures as the placement and use of metal detectors, locks, lighting, and other deterrent measures; security assessment; security training for students and personnel; and coordination with local law enforcement agencies. In fiscal year 2004, SOS distributed nearly $10 million to help schools in 220 high-risk jurisdictions with increasing security concerns. Grantees are required to contribute a local match of 50 percent toward the cost of the grant project.
