This report reviews the history, features, and implementation of the Methamphetamine Initiative of the U.S. Justice Department's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services.
Abstract
Methamphetamine, which is a cheap and addictive stimulant that affects the central nervous system, is produced in clandestine laboratories often located in remote areas. Since 1998, COPS has invested more than $350 million nationwide to combat the spread of methamphetamine through enforcement, training, and lab eradication. The COPS Office encourages agencies to use community-policing strategies in combating methamphetamine production, distribution, and use. One project funded in fiscal year 2004 selected 19 law enforcement agencies to participate in the COPS Methamphetamine Training Initiative, which is designed to assist law enforcement agencies in developing or enhancing comprehensive methamphetamine lab eradication strategies that emphasize training and technical assistance.
