The Methamphetamine Initiative provides Federal grant funding to State, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies to assist them in the dismantling of clandestine methamphetamine laboratories and the removal, storage, and disposal of hazardous chemical materials, equipment, and other waste products found on laboratory sites. Under some circumstances, these activities may be required to comply with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), which imposes specified requirements on federally assisted activities that may impact the quality of the environment. In accordance with NEPA, the COPS Office completed its most recent Environmental Assessment for the Methamphetamine Initiative in 2003. This involved an evaluation of the environmental impacts of activities funded under the Methamphetamine Initiative. The assessment determined that any potential risks to the environment from the funded laboratory-dismantling activities were overshadowed by the risks to the environment of the illicit production of methamphetamine and the producers' improper storage and disposal of associated hazardous chemicals.
