This News at a Glance newsletter features research and events from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP).
Abstract
OJJDP’s Gang Reduction Program (GRP) supports local gang prevention and intervention programs, including Homeboy Industries, which offers gang-involved and at-risk youth a variety of employment-centered services. Homeboy Industries is featured in the newsletter because it has successfully coordinated Federal and local funding to strengthen its youth gang intervention services. The 2006 Children’s Alliance leadership conference for learners in the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) is highlighted, along with OJJDP-funded CAC research including a multisite evaluation of the impact of CACs on children, families, systems, and communities and a cost benefit analysis of child abuse investigations involving CAC’s multidisciplinary team approach. The cost benefit analysis compared CAC to non-CAC investigations and found the average cost for a CAC investigation was less than a non-CAC investigation and that CAC teams were able to process over 200 times the cases of non-CAC teams. Moreover, CAC services were more highly valued by citizens. Announcements are made concerning National Youth Court Month (September) and a national training seminar entitled, “Developing and Implementing Youth Courts,” and the June 2006 annual drug court training conference of the National Association of Drug Court Professionals is described. Upcoming OJJDP events that focus on mentoring and minority justice issues are enumerated followed by descriptions of new OJJDP publications, including an overview of the Juvenile Offenders and Victims: 2006 National Report. OJJDP staff news is presented, as is news from the Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention and from the Federal Advisory Committee on Juvenile Justice.
