Annotation: The Bureau of Justice Assistance’s (BJA’s) Annual Reports for fiscal years 2006 and 2007 focus on its programs and policies that have provided a wide range of resources to law enforcement, courts, corrections, treatment, justice information sharing, and community-based partnerships in addressing emerging and chronic crime challenges nationwide.
Abstract: Created in 1984, the BJA is responsible for strengthening the Nation’s criminal justice system by helping local, State, and tribal governments reduce and prevent crime and violence. During fiscal years 2006 and 2007, BJA’s priorities have been local control; the development of collaborations and partnerships in the field; the promotion of capacity-building through planning; the streamlining of the administration of funding and resources; increasing training and technical assistance; creating accountability for projects; encouraging innovation; and communicating the value of justice efforts. BJA’s funding appropriations are reported under the following topics: bulletproof vest partnership; Public Safety Officer Benefits Program; Drug Court Grant; payment programs; Byrne Program; tribal assistance; Justice Assistance Grant Program; Byrne Program; and other programs. For each fiscal year, descriptions and data are provided for BJA-sponsored programs in such areas as crime prevention, violent crime, gangs, drug crime and abuse, corrections alternatives, criminal justice tools and science, and the protection of vulnerable populations. An included CD-ROM contains supplementary tables for BJA awards administered in each of the fiscal years.
