This fact sheet from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention presents data on the number of person offense cases in juvenile courts for the year 2008.

Abstract

Highlights from this fact sheet regarding the number of person offense cases handled by juvenile courts in 2008 include the following: of the total number of delinquency cases handled by the courts in 2008, person offense cases accounted for 24 percent, compared to 16 percent in 1985; the majority of person offense cases were for simple assault, 67 percent, or aggravated assault, 12 percent; white youth were involved in 56 percent of person offense cases, compared to Black youth (41 percent) and American Indian and Asian youth (1 percent each); since 1985, the female share of the person offense caseload has increased steadily from 21 percent to 29 percent; in 58 percent of the person offense cases disposed by juvenile courts, a petition was filed requesting an adjudicatory hearing; and in 58 percent of the petitioned person offense cases, the youth were adjudicated delinquent in the juvenile justice system, while 40 percent were adjudicated not delinquent and 2 percent were judicially waived to criminal court.
