Abstract

The Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 (PREA; P.L. 108-79) requires the Attorney General to submit to Congress, not later than June 30 of each year, a report on the activities of the Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) for the preceding calendar year. This document fulfills this requirement. During 2011-12, BJS provided the first-ever national estimates of the prevalence of sexual victimization during incarceration, based on reports of former state prison inmates. The National Former Prisoners Survey included a sample of more than 18,500 adults under active parole supervision in 333 randomly selected parole offices nationwide. During the year BJS also completed the third National Inmate Survey (NIS) in adult prisons and jails. For the first time the NIS will provide national-level estimates of sexual victimization of inmates under age 18 held in adult facilities. BJS also began data collection for the second National Survey of Youth in Custody (NSYC-2). When completed, NYSC-2 will provide national estimates, facility-level estimates for large facilities, and state-level estimates of sexual victimization of youth held in juvenile facilities.
