The purpose of the IPEP is to build the capacity of State and local criminal justice systems to prevent and prosecute intellectual property (IP) crimes. The IPEP provides funding to cover the following: IP crime enforcement investigations and prosecutions; education about IP crime laws for law enforcement professionals and the public; and task forces to conduct investigations and acquire equipment to conduct forensic analysis of evidence. Key observations for work of IPEP for the third quarter of FY 2012 include 1) IPEP grantees seized over $23 million in merchandise; 2) the number of arrests for IP crimes was 6 percent higher than in the previous quarter; 3) the retail value of the merchandise seized was less than the previous quarter but slightly more than the average over the past 4 years; and 4) training programs funded through the IPEP focused on general IP issues, local IP laws, and training to identify and investigate IP crimes.
