This publication provides information on the key components of Tribal Healing to Wellness courts.
Abstract
This publication is part of a series of publications geared towards assisting tribal governments and tribal justice systems in developing, enhancing, and sustaining Tribal Healing to Wellness courts. The 10 key components of Tribal ) Healing to Wellness courts include 1) the courts should focus on individual and community healing; 2) defendants can enter the courts through various referral points and legal processes that promote tribal sovereignty; 3) early screening is used to determine defendants' eligibility for the system; 4) the courts provide access to treatment and rehabilitation services; 5) the courts provide intensive supervision to participants; 6) the courts use progressive rewards to encourage participant compliance with court requirements; 7) continued collaboration between the court judges and the court's team and staff; 8) use of monitoring and evaluation to improve the court processes; 9) promoting continued interdisciplinary and community education to promote the courts efforts; and 10) ongoing commitments, communication, coordination, and cooperation among court team members, service providers, and payers.
