Abstract
These Web pages by the National Parole Resource Center provides information for paroling authorities that work with offenders with mental illness and/or substance use disorders. The information will allow paroling authorities to work effectively with other criminal justice agencies using evidence-based practices to deal effectively with the population of offenders with behavioral health disorders (mental illness, substance use disorders, or both). The guide provides information on offenders with mental disorders, detailing their behavioral health needs, assessing them for risk to reoffend and their propensity for violence, and evaluating the effectiveness of mental health treatment. The guide provides background information on offenders with substance use disorders, detailing screening and assessment needs and evidence based practices shown to work with this population. The resource guide also presents a framework for reducing recidivism and promoting recovery among offenders with mental illnesses and/or substance abuse disorders, as well as a list of 10 practice targets designed to guide paroling authority operations.
