This guide provides information to law enforcement agencies regarding the enforcement of Federal law that requires auto recyclers to report monthly vehicle identification numbers (VINs) for the vehicles processed by their businesses.
Abstract
These VINs are stored monthly in the database of the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS), which is accessible online. This guide provides tips on identifying NMVTIS violations by vehicle recycling businesses. Among the tips are to check for NMVTIS registration when checking for business licenses and also record VINs of all junk and salvage automobiles. In addition, the guide provides information on how to report violations to the NMVTIS Program Office. The guide also instructs law enforcement agencies in the penalties for a business that violates the NMVYIS reporting requirement; how to access NMVTIS data; the types of businesses that qualify as a NMVTIS reporting entity; how a business reports the required information; and how a consumer can obtain a NMVTIS vehicle history report.
