Apply for Law Enforcement Research Award

The Excellence in Law Enforcement Research Award recognizes law enforcement agencies that demonstrate excellence in initiating, collaborating on, and employing research to improve police operations and public safety. Applications are due by June 29, 2013. (NIJ)

 
Comments Sought for Human Trafficking Action Plan

OVC is seeking public comments on a Federal Strategic Action Plan that outlines a 5-year collaborative, multiphase effort to improve services to victims of human trafficking in the United States. Review the plan, make recommendations to strengthen the plan, and suggest additional items that can be accomplished through collaboration. Submit comments by May 24, 2013. (OVC)

OVC Spotlights Consultant Terri Spahr Nelson

Terri Spahr Nelson is a psychotherapist, educator, and author with more than 30 years of experience in mental health and behavioral sciences, specializing in victims of violence. She is also a trainer in the areas of sexual trauma, military sexual trauma, and vicarious trauma. A military veteran, Ms. Nelson received the Army Commendation Medal twice. (OVC)

As a prelude to National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW), April 21-27, 2013, register to attend the National Crime Victims’ Service Awards Ceremony on April 24, 2013, at 2 p.m. ET in Washington, DC. The Bulletproof Vest Partnership (BVP) is a unique Department of Justice initiative that provides funds to support the purchase of NIJ-approved vests. Applications are being accepted through the electronic BVP system. (BJA)

 
Applications Sought for Geospatial Predictive Policing Grant

Application deadline: June 17, 2013
Through the Testing Geospatial Predictive Policing Strategies solicitation, NIJ is seeking research that explores the relationships and disconnects between current geospatial predictive policing strategies and scientific theory. The goal of the proposed research is to demonstrate how empirical results can be used to improve upon or change current theory and practice. (NIJ)

 
Applicants Sought To Expand Model Programs Guide

Application deadline: May 20, 2013
Funding is available to develop and expand the content of OJJDP’s Model Programs Guide. The Guide is an online resource that contains information about more than 200 evidence-based juvenile justice intervention and prevention programs and practices. (OJJDP)

 
Apply for 2014 NCVRW Community Awareness Project

Application deadline: April 18, 2013
One cooperative agreement of $375,000 will be awarded for the National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) Community Awareness Project to provide financial and technical assistance to help support 60 communities nationwide as they conduct public education and awareness activities on crime victims’ rights and services in their jurisdictions during National Crime Victims’ Rights Week in 2014. Apply for Community Violence Prevention Research Grant

Application deadline: May 28, 2013
OJJDP is seeking applicants for its Community-Based Violence Prevention Field-Initiated Research and Evaluation Program. OJJDP will fund rigorous, field-initiated research and evaluation to prevent and reduce youth violence (including gun violence) and exposure to violence. (OJJDP)

 
Apply To Improve Firearm Background Checks

Application deadline: May 13, 2013
Through the Improving the Completeness of Firearm Background Checks through Enhanced State Data Sharing solicitation, BJA is seeking applications to implement data sharing that will improve the effectiveness of background checks for the purchase of firearms. This competitive grant opportunity will improve and expand accessible data at the time of a firearm background check to ensure lawful purchases. (BJA and BJS)

 
Countering Radicalization to Violent Extremism

Application deadline: June 5, 2013
NIJ seeks proposals for Research and Evaluation on Radicalization to Violent Extremism in the United States. The goal of this research is to aid state, local, and tribal criminal justice agencies and their attendant communities in implementing programs that prevent or counter radicalization to violent extremism. Develop a State Victim Assistance Academy

Application deadline: May 13, 2013
Up to six first-year awards of $35,000 will be awarded to develop State Victim Assistance Academies (SVAA) that will provide comprehensive, academically based, fundamental education and training for victim assistance providers, victim advocates, criminal justice personnel, and allied professionals who routinely work with victims of crime. Funding Available for Tribal Youth Leadership Grant

Application deadline: May 20, 2013
OJJDP is seeking applicants for the National Intertribal Youth Leadership Development Initiative. The award recipient will plan and implement an initiative to enhance tribal efforts to increase youth engagement, coordination, and action related to juvenile justice, delinquency prevention, and public safety in Indian country. Funding Helps Offenders With Co-Occurring Disorders

Application deadline: May 16, 2013
The Second Chance Act Reentry Program for Adult Offenders with Co-Occurring Substance Abuse and Mental Health Disorders grant awards funds to treat co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders in prisons and jails and to provide recovery support services, reentry planning and programming, and postrelease treatment and aftercare programming in the community through the completion of parole or court supervision. Grant Provides Funds for Indigent Defense Systems

Application deadline: May 6, 2013
Through the Answering Gideon’s Call: National Assistance To Improve the Effectiveness of Right to Counsel Services solicitation, BJA is seeking applicants that will engage in a broad range of activities to improve the quality of representation of indigent defendants and ensure professional and ongoing technical assistance to the indigent defense bar. Grant Provides ICAC Task Force Training

Application deadline: May 28, 2013
Under the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force National Training Program, OJJDP seeks innovative, effective approaches to the design and delivery of training to support the work of ICAC task forces and affiliated law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies. (OJJDP)

 
National TeleNursing Center Seeks National Pilot Sites

Application deadline: May 15, 2013
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) is developing a National Sexual Assault TeleNursing Center. MDPH has issued a Request for Response (RFR) for three sites serving rural, tribal, and corrections populations to partner with the center. Reducing the Backlog of DNA Casework

Application deadline: May 13, 2013
The goal of the DNA Backlog Reduction Program is to help eligible states and units of local government with existing crime laboratories reduce the turnaround time to process DNA samples, increase the capacity of public DNA laboratories, and reduce DNA casework backlogs. (NIJ)

 
Research Needed on White Collar Crime

Application deadline: June 19, 2013
Proposals are sought for Research and Evaluation on White Collar Crime (WCC) to improve public safety and advance the administration of criminal justice. Applicants must justify the merit of their proposal by describing how it will enhance the WCC knowledge base, address existing research gaps, or contribute to promising prevention or intervention practices in the area of WCC. Solicitation Available for SCAAP Funds

Application deadline: May 13, 2013
Applicants are sought for the FY 2013 State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP). SCAAP provides federal payments to states and localities that incurred correctional officer salary costs for incarcerating undocumented criminal aliens with at least one felony or two misdemeanor convictions for violations of state or local law, and who were incarcerated for at least 4 consecutive days. Studying Offender Decision-Making

Application deadline: June 17, 2013
Through the Research on Offender Decision-Making solicitation, NIJ seeks to expand existing research by examining the process of adult offender decision-making with respect to the decision to offend. NIJ requests proposals that either expand the rational choice model or use other theories (e.g., behavioral economics, business models, psychology, or cognitive models) or both. (NIJ)

2013 NCVRW Theme DVD Available

The 2013 National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) Theme DVD is now available. This 6-minute video, part of the 2013 NCVRW Resource Guide, highlights both new challenges faced by victims and those who serve victims, as well as new solutions and opportunities for response. Latest Issue of SMART Watch Released

The spring 2013 issue of "SMART Watch" (NCJ 241721) discusses an update on the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA) substantial implementation, implementation of SORNA in Indian Country, and the International Tracking of Sex Offenders Working Group. It also includes information on the SMART Office’s new technological tools. (SMART)

 
Report Describes Workplace Violence Against Government Employees

BJS has released "Workplace Violence Against Government Employees, 1994-2011" (NCJ 241349, 19 pp.). This is the first report devoted solely to government employees and their experience with workplace violence. The annual average rate of workplace violence declined for both government and private-sector employees from 1994 to 2011. (BJS)

April 2013 has been designated as National Child Abuse Prevention Month. In recognition, NCJRS invites you to view the Child Abuse Special Feature. This resource contains links to publications and Web sites that focus on the prevalence and prevention of child abuse; it also discusses government and community responses to cases of child abuse. Webinar To Discuss Implementation Science

On May 1, 2013, at 3 p.m. ET, the National Criminal Justice Association and BJA will host "Implementation Science and the Importance of Fidelity: Replicating Evidence-Based Practices." This Webinar will describe data and lessons learned from a 15-year project of the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency to scale-up a menu of evidence-based programs and treatment modalities. Attend Visual Documentation of Crime Scenes Workshop

RTI International, with funding from NIJ, is offering "Technology Transition Workshop: Technical Advances in the Visual Documentation of Crime Scenes." This workshop will provide the attendee with theory and foundational knowledge as well as hands-on learning with the most prominent instruments being marketed: the PanoScan, the 3D Leica Scanner, and SceneVision. The workshop will take place June 11-12, 2013, in Richmond, Virginia. (NIJ)

 
Workshop To Address Next Generation Technologies

RTI International, with funding from NIJ, is offering "Technology Transition Workshop: A DNA Revolution - Next Generation Technologies." The goal of this workshop is to disseminate new and innovative technical and scientific knowledge on next generation DNA sequencing technologies to forensic laboratory practitioners. The workshop will take place May 21-23, 2013, in Fort Worth, Texas. (NIJ)
