National Missing Children's Day Poster Contest Announced

Fifth grade students are encouraged to participate in the annual National Missing Children's Day poster contest. The national winner will be invited to Washington, DC, to receive an award for his or her winning artwork during the commemoration of National Missing Children's Day on May 15, 2013. Submissions must be received by March 21, 2013. (OJJDP)

 
OVC TTAC Spotlights Consultant William Kellibrew IV

William Kellibrew IV is an international motivational speaker on victims' rights and a survivor of childhood sexual abuse and family homicide. He has shared his story of resiliency on national television and radio. In 2010, Mr. Kellibrew was the keynote speaker for OVC's National Crime Victims' Rights Week Candlelight Observance. (OVC)

 
Register for Crime Victims' Service Awards Ceremony

As a prelude to National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW), April 21-27, 2013, register to attend the National Crime Victims' Service Awards Ceremony on April 24, 2013, at 2 p.m. ET in Washington, DC. Applications Sought To Evaluate Firearms and Violence

Application deadline: May 2, 2013
The Research on Firearms and Violence solicitation seeks applications for research on firearms and violence that includes, but is not limited to, the effects of criminal justice interventions on reducing gun violence, improving data systems for studying gun violence, illicit gun markets, and the effects of firearm policies and legislation on public safety. Apply for 2014 NCVRW Community Awareness Project

Application deadline: April 18, 2013
One cooperative agreement of $375,000 will be awarded for the National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW) Community Awareness Project to help support 60 communities nationwide by providing financial and technical assistance as they conduct public education and awareness activities on crime victims' rights and services in their jurisdictions during National Crime Victims' Rights Week in 2014. Apply for Graduate Research Fellowship Program

Application deadline: May 23, 2013
The NIJ Graduate Research Fellowship Program provides awards for research on criminal justice-related topics to accredited universities that support graduate study leading to research-based doctoral degrees. Applicants sponsoring doctoral students in policy and health sciences or in an education field may apply if the doctoral dissertation is in an NIJ-supported discipline. (NIJ)

 
Apply for Smart Probation Grant

Application deadline: May 9, 2013
BJA is seeking applications for its Smart Probation: Reducing Prison Populations, Saving Money, and Creating Safer Communities solicitation. The Smart Probation Program seeks to improve probation success rates, which would in turn improve public safety, reduce admissions to prisons and jails, and save taxpayer dollars. (BJA)

 
Apply for Tribal Youth Program Funding

Application deadline: May 6, 2013
OJJDP seeks to establish a Tribal Youth Program Training and Technical Assistance provider. The award recipient will provide culturally appropriate training, support, resources, information, and other related technical assistance to OJJDP's tribal grantees and all federally recognized American Indian and Alaska Native tribes. Apply To Become a Visiting Fellow

Application deadline: March 28, 2013
Through the BJA Visiting Fellows Program solicitation, BJA is recruiting Fellows who have significant work and academic experience in a criminal justice policy, practice, or research setting who can make significant contributions, through BJA, to enhancing practice and innovation in the field. Evaluating School Safety With Police Presence

Application deadline: June 3, 2013
The Evaluation Research on Police and Technology in Schools grant is now available. The proposed research should be comprehensive and include an assessment of school ecology, culture, climate, and social capital in addition to outcomes and other impacts. Multimethod, multimeasurement, and multiple-year projects will be given priority in funding. (NIJ)

 
Funding Available for Prescription Drug Monitoring Program

Application deadline: May 2, 2013
Applications are sought for the Harold Rogers Prescription Drug Monitoring Program solicitation. This program seeks to enhance the capacity of regulatory and law enforcement agencies and public health officials in the collection and analysis of controlled substance prescription data and other chemical products through a centralized database. Funding Available To Assist Victims of Violence

Application deadline: May 20, 2013
NIJ seeks applications for the Research on Violent Victimization solicitation. Funding is available to support research and evaluation related to violent victimization. Research proposed may be focused at the state, local, tribal, federal, juvenile justice policy, and/or practice level. (NIJ)

 
Funding Available To Implement SORNA Programs

Application deadline: March 26, 2013
The Support for Adam Walsh Act Implementation Grant Program solicitation will support jurisdictions that are developing and/or enhancing programs designed to implement the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (SORNA) of the Adam Walsh Act. SORNA protects children and adults from sexual exploitation and violent crime, prevents child abuse and child pornography, and promotes Internet safety. (SMART)

 
Funding Available To Improve Mentoring Programs

Application deadline: April 29, 2013
OJJDP seeks applications for the National Mentoring Programs solicitation. This program supports the implementation, delivery, and enhancement of mentoring services to improve outcomes for at-risk, high-risk, or underserved youth. (OJJDP)

 
Funding Available To Organize VOCA Administrator Conference

Application deadline: March 18, 2013
OVC is seeking applicants to plan and implement the National Joint Training Conference for VOCA Victim Assistance and Victim Compensation Administrators, to be held in 2014. One discretionary grant of $150,000 will be awarded and, depending on grantee performance and funding availability, additional funding may be provided to plan and execute the 2015 conference. Funding Available To Reduce Violence In Communities

Application deadline: April 22, 2013
The Community-Based Violence Prevention Demonstration Program provides funding for localities to support federal, state, and local partnerships to replicate proven multidisciplinary, community-based strategies to reduce violence. (OJJDP)

 
Funding Provides Support to ICAC Task Forces

Application deadline: May 7, 2013
Through the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Program Support solicitation, OJJDP will select an awardee to provide a variety of services and support to the Internet Crimes Against Children task force program. (OJJDP)

 
Funding Supports Family Drug Court Program

Application deadline: May 6, 2013
The Family Drug Court Training and Technical Assistance Program helps states, state and local courts, units of local government, and Indian tribal governments develop, maintain, and enhance drug courts for substance-abusing adults who are involved with the family court because of child abuse and/or neglect issues. Funds Support Evaluation of Tribal Youth Programs

Application deadline: May 14, 2013
The Evaluation of Programs for Tribal Youth solicitation will fund one or more evaluation studies to produce findings of practical use to tribal communities, practitioners, administrators, and policymakers in the identification, adaptation, and testing of promising programs, policies, and strategies for tribal juvenile justice and delinquency prevention. Grant Supports Multi-State Mentoring Initiative

Application deadline: April 30, 2013
The Multi-State Mentoring Initiative will support qualified, established mentoring programs as they expand services for underserved at-risk and high-risk youth and enhance services to implement additional research- and evidence-based mentoring practices. (OJJDP)

 
Grants Enhance Tribal Justice Systems

Application deadline: April 4, 2013
BJA is seeking applicants for its Tribal Civil and Criminal Legal Assistance Grants, Training, and Technical Assistance program, which provides grants for direct legal services for indigent defendants and respondents in tribal justice systems. This solicitation also seeks applications to provide advocacy training and technical assistance for the development, enrichment, and enhancement of judicial system personnel within tribal justice systems. HHS Announces Pregnancy Assistance Fund Grant

Application deadline: April 10, 2013
The Department of Health and Human Services' Office of Adolescent Health (OAH) has announced the availability of fiscal year 2013 funding for the development and implementation of programs to support pregnant and parenting teens, women, and their families through OAH's Pregnancy Assistance Fund. Improving Officer Safety and Wellness

Application deadline: May 2, 2013
Funding for the National Initiatives: Officer Safety and Wellness Initiative-VALOR is now available. The initiative focuses on providing a holistic approach to improving and reinforcing law enforcement safety, resilience, health, and wellness. (BJA)

 
Research Needed To Protect the Elderly

Application deadline: May 20, 2013
The Research and Evaluation on Abuse, Neglect, and Exploitation of Elderly Individuals grant sponsors research to provide objective, independent, evidence-based knowledge and tools to meet the challenges of identifying, reporting, investigating, and prosecuting cases of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of elders in the community and all individuals living in residential care facilities. Solicitation Examines Children Exposed to Violence

Application deadline: May 20, 2013
Funding is available for the Research and Evaluation on Children Exposed to Violence solicitation. NIJ is seeking proposals that address resilience, polyvictimization, electronic aggression, or justice system responses to children identified as being exposed to violence. (NIJ)

 
Solicitation Seeks To Improve Researcher-Practitioner Partnerships

Application deadline: May 31, 2013
The Building and Enhancing Criminal Justice Researcher-Practitioner Partnerships solicitation supports criminal justice research and evaluation activities that include a researcher-practitioner partnership component. Results from these projects should lead to better criminal justice policy, practice, and research, especially for the practitioner partners. (NIJ)

NIJ Journal Discusses Tool That Predicts Recidivism

The lead article in "NIJ Journal Issue No. 271" (NCJ 240695, 44 pp.) provides an indepth look at a computerized system that predicts which probationers are most likely to reoffend. Additional articles discuss the NIJ ballistic body armor followup inspection and testing program, GPS monitoring of sexual offenders, and challenges in combating human trafficking. (NIJ)

 
Policy Brief Discusses Women's Pathways to Jail

BJA's Policy Brief discusses the BJA-funded multisite Women's Pathways to Jail study, which addresses critical gaps in the literature by assessing the prevalence of serious mental illness, posttraumatic stress disorder, and substance use disorders in women in jail. Report Details Sexual Violence Against Females

"Female Victims of Sexual Violence, 1994-2010" (NCJ 240655, 17 pp.) presents trends in the rate of completed or attempted rape or sexual assault against females from 1995 to 2010. The report also examines characteristics of the offender and incident, including victim-offender relationship, whether the offender had a weapon, and the location of the victimization. (BJS)

 
Report Highlights Green Reentry in Tribal Communities

RTI International and American Indian Development Associates have released "Early Implementation Experiences of OJJDP's Tribal Green Reentry Programs." This report details the experiences of three tribal communities that used OJJDP green reentry grant funds to support the use of green technologies and environmentally sustainable activities in reentry programming for youth involved in the tribal justice system. Update on NIJ's Compendium Available

The latest "Compendium of Research on Violence Against Women, 1993-2012" (NCJ 223572, 252 pp.) is now available. This regularly updated compendium lists and briefly describes all of the projects funded under NIJ's Violence Against Women and Family Violence Program. (NIJ)

The 2013 National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW) Theme DVD is now available. This 6-minute video, part of the 2013 NCVRW Resource Guide, highlights both new challenges faced by victims and by those who serve victims, as well as new solutions and opportunities for response. New Resources Address Children Exposed to Violence

OVC is pleased to announce the release of a new video series titled Through Our Eyes: Children, Violence, and Trauma. This series includes a public awareness video and three topic-specific videos—Treatments That Work, The Child Advocacy Center Model, and Community-Based Approaches—and a resource guide.View this online resource to better understand how children are affected by violence and trauma. Online Guide To Forensic Science Launched

The National Forensic Science Technology Center, with funding from BJA, has launched "A Simplified Guide To Forensic Science." This online resource provides a reliable, easily accessible resource for nonscientists that covers the core concepts, capabilities, and limitations of key forensic science disciplines. (BJA)

 
Research Brief Examines Possible Bullying-Suicide Links

In a recent blog post for stopbullying.gov, the authors review the literature to determine possible links between bullying and suicide in children and youth. They conclude that many factors may increase a youth's risk of suicide and caution against assuming there are simple causes for suicidal thoughts or behavior. (OJJDP)

 
Webinar To Address National Juvenile Defender Standards

On March 20, 2013, at 1 p.m. ET, the National Juvenile Justice Network will host the Webinar "The National Juvenile Defense Standards: Why They Matter for Advocates." The National Juvenile Defender Center recently released the standards, which seek to elevate the practice of juvenile law and improve the delivery of legal services to all indigent youth. (OJJDP)

Certified Field Search Instructors Training Offered

KB Solutions, with support from NIJ, is offering Certified Field Search Instructors Training. Training sessions will be held March 18-19, 2013, and August 26-27, 2013, in Denver, Colorado. (NIJ)

 
CJJR Announces Certificate Program Schedule

The Center for Juvenile Justice Reform (CJJR) at Georgetown University's Public Policy Institute has announced its 2013 certificate program schedule. CJJR's programs promote a multisystem, multidisciplinary approach to policies, programs, and practices that improve outcomes for at-risk and justice system-involved youth. The application deadline for "Multi-System Integration Certificate Program" is March 28, 2013. (OJJDP)

 
Conference To Focus on Juvenile Justice Reform

Boyd School of Law at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas will host a free juvenile justice conference on April 12-13, 2013, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Presenters will address the school-to-prison pipeline, the relationship between immigration policy and juvenile justice, behavioral and legal issues involving juvenile sex offenders, disclosure of juvenile records, and more. Forensic Science Training Available for Legal Professionals

West Virginia University, with support from NIJ, is offering "Essentials of Forensic Science for Legal Professionals Program." This program will take place March 19-20, 2013, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It will provide the basic precepts of forensic science training and supply the tools to effectively apply this information for trial. (NIJ)

 
Institute Provides Training for Law Enforcement Officers

NIJ's Technology Institute: Law Enforcement will be held June 2-6, 2013, in Annapolis, Maryland. The institute provides an opportunity for law enforcement officers to learn about and discuss technology initiatives and issues affecting the law enforcement community. Applications must be received by March 29, 2013. (NIJ)

 
Seminar Discusses Wrongful Convictions

On March 25, 2013, at 10 a.m. ET, NIJ will host "Wrongful Convictions: The Latest Scientific Research & Implications for Law Enforcement."  In this presentation, Jon Gould, Ph.D., and John R.
