Comments Sought for Human Trafficking Action Plan

OVC is seeking public comments on a Federal Strategic Action Plan that outlines a 5-year collaborative, multiphase effort to improve services to victims of human trafficking in the United States. Review the plan, make recommendations to strengthen the plan, and suggest additional items that can be accomplished through collaboration. Submit comments by May 24, 2013. (OVC)

 
Crime Victims’ Service Awards Recipients Announced Online

On April 24, 2013, OVC hosted the 2013 National Crime Victims’ Service Awards Ceremony as part of the National Crime Victims’ Rights Week commemoration. At the ceremony, Attorney General Eric Holder honored individuals and organizations for their service to crime victims. Biographies and photos of the honorees are available on OVC’s Facebook page and the OVC Gallery. (OVC)

 
Dates Released for NCVRW 2014

Each April, OVC helps lead communities throughout the country in their annual observances of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW) by promoting victims’ rights and honoring crime victims and those who advocate on their behalf. In 2014, NCVRW will be observed April 6-12. (OVC)

 
Global Youth Justice Launches Web Sites

On May 1, 2013, Global Youth Justice, in conjunction with the American Bar Association and its celebration of Law Day, helped local youth courts in 41 states launch 250 Web sites to promote their juvenile justice diversion programs. (OJJDP)

 
MOV Nomination Period To Open May 31

The nomination period for the Public Safety Officer Medal of Valor (MOV) will be open from May 31 to July 31, 2013. The medal is awarded annually by the President to public safety officers who have exhibited exceptional courage, regardless of personal safety, in the attempt to save or protect human life. (BJA)

 
OVC Spotlights Consultant William Stutz

William Stutz has extensive experience managing statewide programs in the State of Washington and its Department of Corrections for 33 years. He directed the first corrections-based victim services program and first corrections-based protection program in the nation. Mr. Stutz currently provides training and technical assistance on restorative justice programs in corrections. (OVC)

 
Participants Sought To Complete Price Index Survey

The Producer Price Index (PPI) program at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is requesting help surveying current and potential data users in order to improve their data. The program focuses on the average change in selling prices received by domestic producers of goods and services. The survey is accessible from the PPI homepage. (BJS)

 
Reentry Council Meeting Held in April

Attorney General Eric Holder convened the fourth meeting of the Federal Interagency Reentry Council on April 25, 2013. Since 2011, this governmentwide body has worked to make communities both safer and stronger by reducing recidivism and lowering the direct and indirect costs of incarceration. (OJP)

Applications Sought for Geospatial Predictive Policing Grant

Application deadline: June 17, 2013
Through the Testing Geospatial Predictive Policing Strategies solicitation, NIJ is seeking research that explores the relationships and disconnects between current geospatial predictive policing strategies and scientific theory. The goal of the proposed research is to demonstrate how empirical results can be used to improve upon or change current theory and practice. (NIJ)

 
Applicants Sought To Evaluate Transnational Issues

Application deadline: June 5, 2013
The Research and Evaluation on Transnational Issues: Trafficking in Persons, Organized Crime, and Violent Extremism solicitation seeks applications on the phenomenon of transnational crime issues. The goal of this solicitation is to provide the information and evidence-based practices that state, local, and tribal criminal justice agencies need to secure their communities against transnational crimes. Application deadline: June 13, 2013
Through the Joint Adult Drug Court Solicitation to Enhance Services, Coordination, and Treatment, BJA and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration are seeking to enhance the court services, coordination, and evidence-based substance abuse treatment and recovery support services of adult drug courts. Assessing Youth With Sexual Offending Behavior

Application deadline: June 24, 2013
The Basic Scientific Research to Assess Youth With Sexual Offending Behavior solicitation seeks applications for basic scientific research in the development and validation of a risk assessment tool designed for use in criminal and juvenile justice systems to estimate the short-term risk that juveniles with a history of sex offenses may recommit sex offenses. Funding Available To Develop Trauma Response Toolkit

Application deadline: June 13, 2013
OVC is seeking applications for funding An Evidence-Based Approach to Understanding and Addressing Vicarious Trauma in Victim Assistance Professionals, Law Enforcement Officers, and Other First Responders. The goal of the program is to identify and test the effectiveness of state-of-the-art training and technical assistance to the victim assistance, law enforcement, and other first responder fields. Up to $1,250,000 may be awarded for a 24-month project period. (OVC)

 
Funding Improves Collaboration Between Researchers and Practitioners

Application deadline: June 10, 2013
OVC is seeking applications for the Bridging the Gap in Victim-Related Research to Practice solicitation. One cooperative agreement of $750,000 will be awarded to conduct an assessment of victim service providers to ascertain their level of awareness and knowledge about the benefits of social science research and program evaluation for their work with victims of crime. Funding Provides Services for Human Trafficking Victims

Application deadline: June 10, 2013
OVC is seeking applications for the Services for Victims of Human Trafficking solicitation. This program will provide funding to victim service organizations with a demonstrated history of providing trauma-informed, culturally competent services to victims of human trafficking. (OVC)

 
Grant Available for Du Bois Fellowship Program

Application deadline: May 28, 2013
One cooperative agreement of $375,000 will be awarded for the W.E.B. Du Bois Fellowship for Research on Race, Gender, Culture, and Crime to advance knowledge regarding the confluence of crime, justice, and culture in various societal contexts within the United States. NIJ seeks up to two fellows whose research places emphasis on crime, violence, and the administration of justice in diverse cultural contexts. (NIJ)

 
Research Needed on White Collar Crime

Application deadline: June 19, 2013
Proposals are sought for Research and Evaluation on White Collar Crime (WCC) to improve public safety and advance the administration of criminal justice. Applicants must justify the merit of their proposal by describing how it will enhance the WCC knowledge base, address existing research gaps, or contribute to promising prevention or intervention practices in the area of WCC. Solicitation Funds Two Vision 21 Fellowships

Application deadline: June 10, 2013
OVC is seeking applications for the Victim Assistance Professional Development Fellowship Program - Vision 21 Fellowships. This announcement is for two distinct fellowships: the Legal Assistance Fellowship and the Strategic Engagement Fellowship. Up to $135,000 is available for each fellowship, with no more than $95,000 to be allocated for salary. The Legal Assistance Fellowship is open only to attorneys. (OVC)

 
Studying Offender Decision-Making

Application deadline: June 17, 2013
Through the Research on Offender Decision-Making solicitation, NIJ seeks to expand existing research by examining the process of adult offender decision-making with respect to the decision to offend. NIJ requests proposals that either expand the rational choice model or use other theories (e.g., behavioral economics, business models, psychology, or cognitive models) or both. (NIJ)

Defending Childhood Task Force Report Available

Print copies of "Report of the Attorney General’s National Task Force on Children Exposed to Violence" are now available. The Attorney General commissioned this report as part of the Defending Childhood Initiative. It details the recommendations of the National Task Force on Children Exposed to Violence and is a blueprint for reducing the impact of trauma on children who witness or experience violence. Helping Agencies Build Cost-Benefit Analysis Capacity

"Building Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) Capacity in Criminal Justice: Notes from a Roundtable Discussion" (NCJ 242014, 16 pp.) summarizes the findings of a roundtable discussion held by state policy entities, nonprofit organizations, and elected officials from four states who discussed strategies to build CBA capacity. Webinar To Explore Educating System-Involved Youth

On May 16, 2013, at 2 p.m. ET, OJJDP’s National Training and Technical Assistance Center will present the Webinar "Reversing the School-to-Prison Pipeline: From Incarceration to Education." Presenters will discuss strategies for engaging system-involved youth in culturally relevant education programs, developing high-quality program components, and exploring the benefits of higher education in juvenile justice settings. Apply for Multi-System Integration Certificate Program

The Center for Juvenile Justice Reform at Georgetown University’s Public Policy Institute is accepting applications for its Multi-System Integration Certificate Program to be held October 23-30, 2013, in Washington, DC. The program will highlight multi-system reform efforts related to at-risk or system-involved youth, with a focus on crossover youth. Applications are due by June 20, 2013. (OJJDP)

 
Attend Visual Documentation of Crime Scenes Workshop

RTI International, with funding from NIJ, is offering "Technology Transition Workshop: Technical Advances in the Visual Documentation of Crime Scenes." This workshop will provide the attendee with theory and foundational knowledge as well as hands-on learning with the most prominent instruments being marketed: the PanoScan, the 3D Leica Scanner, and SceneVision. The workshop will take place June 11-12, 2013, in Richmond, Virginia. (NIJ)

 
Conference To Address Advocacy Leadership

On June 2-5, 2013, in Washington, DC, the National Children’s Alliance will host its annual leadership conference. The conference theme is "On the Horizon: The Next Chapter in Child Advocacy." Experts will lead sessions designed to assist children’s advocacy center professionals. Topics include creating trauma-informed child-serving systems, screening for and assessing trauma, developing effective advocacy programs, fundraising, and more. (OJJDP)

 
Forensic Science Training Available for Legal Professionals

West Virginia University, with support from NIJ, is offering “Basic Crime Scene Investigation for Legal Professionals.” This course will give legal professionals an opportunity to practice the skills necessary to properly recognize, document, collect, and preserve evidence. It will be held July 29 to August 1, 2013, in Morgantown, West Virginia. (NIJ)

 
Workshop To Address Next Generation Technologies

RTI International, with funding from NIJ, is offering "Technology Transition Workshop: A DNA Revolution - Next Generation Technologies." The goal of this workshop is to disseminate new and innovative technical and scientific knowledge on next generation DNA sequencing technologies to forensic laboratory practitioners. The workshop will take place May 21-23, 2013, in Fort Worth, Texas. (NIJ)
